Stories of Hope from Goodwill Rescue Mission

A Journey to Freedom

With Christ carrying his burdens, Craig has been able to overcome his drug addiction.

Craig Scudder had been addicted to heroine and cocaine for over 20 years when he found himself at a point he never thought he would be: jobless, homeless and hopeless. He came to Goodwill Rescue Mission just for a safe place to sleep and a hot meal, or so he thought. But, while listening to the evening chapel service he realized God had a lot more in store for him and his stay at Goodwill Rescue Mission.

When he was growing up Craig often witnessed his parents getting high. He told himself he wanted something different for his life, but when both of his parents died when he was 18 he started looking for something to take away the pain. Unfortunately, he found drugs. For a long time Craig thought he had everything under control. He was able to work odd jobs to support his drug habit and for awhile was a superintendant at an apartment building so he had a place to stay. He often tried to get clean but nothing seemed to work, not even three years in prison.

While in prison he was usually able to get drugs and when he got out he went right back to life on the streets. He would go days without eating and months without taking a shower. One day his drug dealers were arrested and he was without drugs, had no place to stay and had no one to turn to. That’s when he decided to come to Goodwill Rescue Mission and try to get clean one more time.

After decades of struggling Craig realized that it was only going to be with God’s help that he would overcome his drug addiction. He committed his life to the Lord over two years ago and has been clean ever since! He says “It’s easier to stay clean with God’s help, even though I can do whatever I want, than it ever was while I was locked up and didn’t have any freedom.”

Craig graduated Goodwill’s life-change program last year and now is employed in our Operations Department. He loves to share what God has done for him and acts as a mentor for other men who are new to Goodwill Rescue Mission. He is an active member of his church and hopes to one day mentor youth and help them avoid the mistakes he made as a young man.
