Compassionate Care

Since 1896 Goodwill Rescue Mission has met the short-term, emergency needs of the hurting and homeless of Newark and Essex County caught in the cycles of poverty, hopelessness and dependencies of many kinds with compassionate care services – hot food, safe shelter, warm showers, hygiene items and fresh, clean clothes, and encouragement from God’s word.

Because we know that a simple act of kindness can be the first step toward a transformed life, we try to meet each need of those who come to Goodwill Rescue Mission with practical expressions of God’s love – no questions asked, free of charge.

Every meal at Goodwill Rescue Mission comes with a smile, friendship, and hope for a new life. We serve more than 260 meals every single day.

While Newark sleeps, our staff is on duty serving as many as 43 men each night (expanded during winter), who would otherwise be on the streets.

Besides getting a safe place to sleep, our guests at the Emergency Shelter program also receive clothing, hygiene products, and access to showers.

Our staff works with our guests to learn about their specific situation, helping them to determine the best course of action for life improvement.

Nightly Chapel Services provide an opportunity to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of everyone who enters our doors. To that end, the Mission conducts daily chapel service with the help of our church partners, at 6:30 pm nightly for all our residents and guests to attend. Each service lasts approximately one hour and consists of praise and worship, prayer, and an inspirational message.

Goodwill Rescue Mission is working to meet the physical and spiritual needs of our neighbors in need in Newark and northern New Jersey. Your gifts provide practical care to hurting and homeless individuals, and invite them to dare to hope for a life of dignity, productivity and independence.
